More Americans Own Guns in the Home Than Ever

Postby bignflnut » Tue Sep 12, 2017 10:24 am

It’s never been a worse time to be a burglar according to a new according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey that said more people than ever have guns in their home.

According to the survey of 1,200 American adults, 48 percent said they or someone in their home own a firearm.

SNIP

As trends come and go, one thing that will never stop is the American will to defend one’s person and property. While gun sales may spike and fall depending on who is promoting/restricting their use, America’s founding had guns in mind when in its groundwork. They’re integral to our freedom and safety.

A bit hyperbolic taking the response of 1200 people and drawing a conclusion about 300 million plus households...

We can hope that the silent majority is growing and that common sense still lives in the heart of America.

Back before licensed carry, a guy mentioned to me that while he was away from home, his house was burglarized. He then mentioned that he was going to buy a gun. I asked him how it that going to prevent a burglary when he isn't home? He couldn't legally carry it with him all the time.

Even assuming the survey accurately reflects all homes, merely having guns in a home isn't a deterrent to burglars at all. In fact, it might make that home a more tempting target. What might give a burglar pause isn't merely a gun somewhere in a house, but a loaded one that's handy to the home owner. (assuming the resident is even home) If the resident isn't home, other things need to be done to deter burglars.

I thought the recently released ATF Firearms Commerce report was interesting.. Ohio ranked like 4th in Suppressor ownership. Meant to take a closer look at all the numbers they released to see what other interesting tidbits were in it.

http://www.tactical-life.com/news/atf-report-silencers/

According to the ATF Firearms Commerce report, these were the 10 states with the largest number of registered silencers as of April 2017:

Texas—242,859
Florida—85,998
Georgia—63,021
Ohio—52,495
South Carolina—50,647
Louisiana—48,903
Alabama—48,118
Virginia—44,014
Utah—42,406
Arizona—40,485

In all, there are currently 1,360,023 registered silencers in the United States. According to the ATF’s 2016 report, there were 902,805 registered silencers.

That's almost a 50% increase in one year..

Texas.. WOW, love those numbers :)

I just realized that I mis-labeled the above lists. That's NOT total NFA items in each state. It's only the number of registered SILENCERS in each state.
Here's all 50 states and totals sorted by Silencers register per 100k population.
Code: Select all
                Silencers   Population  Items/100k
South Dakota    13949       853175      1634.952

Idaho           23475       1634464     1436.251
Wyoming         8294        584153      1419.834
Montana         13471       1023579     1316.068
